Latest updates from the NCETM

As some children return to school, the NCETM has released lots of useful information and resources across both primary and secondary. Some of which are highlighted below:

Secondary

The NCETM have published two new videos designed to support teachers using our Secondary Mastery Professional Development (PD) Materials. The videos are both around five minutes long, and feature a teacher talking to a small number of students from her Year 8 class, using extracts from the PD Materials as a discussion point.

Both videos are also accompanied by a set of PowerPoint slides which are designed to support discussions with colleagues about how to get the best from the PD Materials. All videos and PowerPoints are available by clicking here:

The first video involves students discussing the stretching of a spring, and the second involves an exploration of the expression 3e = 7. Although the focus of the materials is the maths, teachers might also notice the ways in which the teacher supports and challenges the students. The videos could also be used as a way of reflecting, with colleagues, on what the discussions reveal about students’ understanding of the concepts explored.

NOTE: these videos were filmed before the 2020 school closures

Primary

The NCETM have released their new Primary Round-up for June: Year 6 transition ideas, using video lessons, the latest Numberblocks videos and lockdown.

  • Six ways to use the NCETM video lessons – these videos have been widely used to set remote learning. But how else could they be used now that more children are in school?

  • Learning in Lockdown podcast episodes: the podcast series now has three interviews with primary teachers, including their take on returning to school

  • How can schools encourage smooth Year 6 transition? Teachers on Twitter turn their collective mind to transition in this unique time. Get ideas from our contributors

  • New Numberblocks videos from Debbie Morgan - five videos aimed directly at Reception and Year 1 children based on different Numberblocks episodes

  • Calculator Crunch starts next week! Two weeks of daily questions on Twitter for Year 6, from MEI. Plus Year 6 and 7 lessons to support transition.
