Want to become a Teaching for Mastery Specialist?

We are recruiting for 2020/21!
In the current circumstances, teachers are reflecting on their own CPD, so now might seem the perfect opportunity to think about becoming a Mastery Specialist. We are particularly interested in hearing from teachers in the Kirklees, Wakefield, North Lincolnshire and North East Lincolnshire areas.

Become a Primary Teaching for Mastery Specialist

Closing date is 15th June 2020

The NCETM and Yorkshire and Humber Maths Hub will recruit a sixth cohort of teachers to develop and work as Primary Mastery Specialists. 2020/21 will be the development year for the Cohort 6 teachers and their schools. Then, in 2021/22 and in 2022/23, the Mastery Specialists will each lead Work Groups to develop, embed and sustain teaching for mastery for their Maths Hub. It is expected that the Mastery Specialist’s school becomes a leading exponent of teaching for mastery in this time and so the school needs to ensure that it has the capacity and desire to take on and develop a teaching for mastery approach across the whole school.

Before a teacher applies for the role, headteachers might also find it useful to look at the NCETM website where there are interviews with heads who have led the introduction of teaching for mastery in a school. This can be viewed by clicking here.

Have you ever considered becoming a Secondary Mastery Specialist? Here’s what some of our current Specialists have to say about it:

Robert Clasper - Cathedral Academy

Kathryn Darwin
"Working as a Secondary Mastery Specialist has totally changed my approach to planning - the past year I have spent time getting really deep into topics and thinking about their links. My teaching feels more coherent and the students are making much more sense of maths."

Kate Kidd-Rossiter -  The Marvell College, Hull
"The SMS programme has enabled me to develop my own understanding of teaching for mastery alongside a great network of teachers from the region. It has meant that both my department and I have been more successful in delivering to our students."

Brooke Hodgson - Outwood Academy Hemsworth
"The programme has been extremely interesting and has focused my own understanding and thoughts regarding the fundamentals and understanding of delivering Mathematics. The programme has also provided me with the opportunity to discuss and build relationship with other "secondary mastery specialists"
