Primary Teaching for Mastery Focused Issue: Lesson Design (Year 4 focus)
This work group will give you the opportunity to learn with and from other colleagues that have taken part in a Teaching for Mastery Work group and begun the journey within their school towards a TfM approach. The focus will be on collaboratively planning and working with the NCETM Mastery Professional Development Materials and DfE approved text books to improve your confidence with lesson design.
Refining teachers’ understanding of lesson design is a crucial element of developing teaching for mastery. Teachers in this Work Group will observe lessons together to understand the key elements of a mastery lesson and plan collaboratively (drawing on Mastery Professional Development materials produced by NCETM/Maths Hubs and DfE recommended textbooks) and in doing so will improve lesson design across their school.
How will it work?
It involves three face to face workshops with Kevin Scott (Assistant Head at Westcott Primary School), Lesson Design Work Group Lead, across the Summer term. Participants will be expected to attend all workshops.
Who is it aimed at?
Schools who have already begun their journey towards ‘Teaching for Mastery’ and have taken part in a TfM Work Group (TRG).
Two colleagues from the same school need to attend. This ideally should be the Y4 teacher and the maths lead. We find this approach works best to facilitate greater whole school change.
Practitioners will work together to design, deliver, observe and evaluate lessons as well as discussing progress and actions with the Work Group Lead.
What is the time commitment?
Schools will be expected to release participants for the days required and to support them in providing time for collaborative work and the delivery of project gap tasks in school.
It is expected that participating schools will be making attempts to embed mastery in their school.
