Secondary Mastery Programme 2022/23

Secondary Teaching for Mastery at Key Stage 3 – Open Classroom Programme

The Secondary Teaching for Mastery at Key Stage 3 is a Work Group, which aims to develop a Key Stage 3 curriculum to meet the key aims and incorporate pedagogy from the Shanghai Exchange.

Who is the Work Group for/aimed at?

This programme will be ideal for those teachers who would like to develop their understanding of teaching for mastery. Mastery may be completely new to these teachers, they may be non-specialists or they may have an understanding about teaching for mastery but would like to explore the 5 big ideas in greater depth.

It is preferable if two members of your department attend the sessions.

Each delegate will attend four sessions over the academic year and receive a gap task to deliver the lesson in their own school setting and feedback in the subsequent session.

What is involved?

The teachers involved would leave with a greater understanding of teaching for mastery. They will not only receive training in each session but also get to see a lesson in practice. Each session will provide delegates with resources which they can take back into school and share with their department, as well as training resources to develop other staff in the department. Each delegate will receive a gap task to deliver the lesson in their own school setting and feedback in the subsequent session.

Intended Outcomes:

  • Teachers will deepen their understanding of the subject knowledge and pedagogy related to teaching for mastery

  • Teachers will leave each session with new lessons created with mastery in mind to implement into their teaching

  • Teachers will plan more effectively to address the key areas of the new curriculum within all lessons drawing on a wider repertoire of appropriate activities

  • The lead teachers will develop their own PD leadership skills and the department will establish effective PD models to support ongoing improvements

  • The department will identify resources and approaches that can be built into the schemes of work

  • Pupils will improve their fluency and deeper understanding of mathematical concepts giving them the confidence to solve problems and reason.
