Primary TfM (Teaching for Mastery) Development Work Group

Project code: NCP24-09

The Yorkshire and the Humber Maths Hub are delighted to offer you this funded opportunity to take part in this National Collaborative Project (NCP). This Work Group, led by one of our Teaching for Mastery Specialists, is designed to engage teachers and subject leaders in practice-based professional development activity. This will enable teaching for mastery to develop from individual enthusiasms to long term, sustainable, whole-school developments and, together with leadership and management, to the development of whole-school systems.

Who is this for?

  • Schools who wish to develop a teaching for mastery approach. Each school will identify two teachers to take part in the Work Group.

  • Participants will be expected to develop their own practice and, with the support of their Headteacher, start to bring about changes across their school.

Intended outcomes·

  • Participant teachers will develop a deep understanding of the principles of TfM and its associated pedagogies and the ability to plan effective maths lessons that reflect a TfM approach.

  • School leaders will ensure professional development practices are in place so that the cycle of change can be implemented.

  • Pupils will show a positive attitude towards maths, enjoy learning the subject and demonstrate a growth mindset.

Sessions

Each school sends two teachers to half termly meetings arranged by the Mastery Specialist. These meetings give opportunities for joint observation of lessons as well as collaborative planning. After each of these meetings all schools agree actions that they will take before the next meeting. Each term the Mastery Specialist will complete a school visit to support the school in its development of an action plan.
