Targeted Support in Maths - a Bespoke offer
Targeted support in Maths involves schools being supported by their local Maths Hub if they do not currently have the capacity to engage fully with the standard Teaching for Mastery Programme. Leaders at the Maths Hub work with leaders at the school to identify and address barriers to success for pupils in maths.
Importantly, schools need to be committed to making long-term improvements in maths, and to work closely with their local Maths Hub over a number of years.
This year our team at YH Maths Hub has been working with a number of schools in our region to offer this bespoke support, all of whom have now gone on to join the standard Teaching for Mastery Programme.
What is involved?
Schools taking part will receive bespoke support from a Maths Hub Intensive Support Partner (ISP). The ISP will work closely with school leaders to build capacity, create a supportive culture, and lay strong foundations for improving maths teaching and learning. Together, the ISP and school will explore, plan, deliver and sustain a tailored improvement plan.
Funded support is available to provide release time for staff involved in developing and delivering the improvement work, ensuring it fits the school’s context.
By working in partnership, school leaders will:
construct a mutually agreed short- and medium-term implementation plan for maths
be supported to implement and sustain change in a focused area linked to an initial bespoke implementation cycle
feel confident to identify and implement priorities in maths in their school by using an effective cycle of implementation
continue to work with their local Maths Hub through engaging with a Teaching for Mastery Programme (with or without enhanced support).
What is the cost?
Targeted Support in Mathematics (Intensive) is fully funded by the Maths Hubs Programme, so is free to schools who are suitable for referral and able to make the required commitment.
Is there a Case Study of its impact?
Yes, in this NCETM article, it details how bespoke support enabled a primary school to achieve its best ever maths SATs results
Can my school become a Targeted Support School?
Schools may be referred to their local Maths Hub for intensive support that do not currently have the capacity to engage with the standard Teaching for Mastery Programme. To ensure a positive impact on their teaching and learning, schools need to be committed to making long-term improvements in maths, and to work closely with their local Maths Hub over a number of years. This includes a commitment to joining a Teaching for Mastery Programme in future years.
