Encouraging Girls with the Continued Study of Maths

In 2019, Mathematics was the most popular A-Level subject for boys, but only the fourth most popular amongst girls (source AMSP, extracted from Compare School Performance - data: A level attainment in maths and science subjects for England in 2019 by gender).

In the Yorkshire and Humber region, approximately 16% of girls go onto study A-Level Maths, compared with approximately 34% of boys in 2018-19:

This month, the NCETM has reflected upon ways to increase girls' participation in Post-16 Maths. The AMSP’s (Advanced Mathematics Support Programme) new webpage is full of research-led ideas and strategies for getting girls more involved. To find out more, please click the button below:

In addition, a new initiative Maths4Girls, aims to increase A-level take-up among girls. The organisation that developed the initiative arranges for women, in jobs where maths is needed, to speak to groups of secondary school students. The hope is that this will inspire more girls to take maths beyond GCSE and into degrees and careers with maths content. In this podcast, the Project Lead Louise Maule, leads the discussion on the initiative in this podcast:
