Secondary Maths Specialist continues visit to Shanghai

Chloe Scott, Secondary Mastery specialist for Yorkshire and Humber Maths Hub is currently visiting Shanghai with two other Specialists from other Maths Hubs. Chloe is getting the opportunity to spend time in Shanghai schools learning first hand about the Maths experience over there.

Here's what Chloe has to say this week:

Monday 25th November 2019

Good afternoon!

We have just come back from our second day in primary.

Yesterday we taught our lessons. The planning was brilliant - we had the opportunity to plan it together before delivering the plan to the Grade 6 maths teachers. They helped us refine a few areas (mainly taking out what the class haven't covered yet) so when we came to teach we were confident we had a good lesson. The students were amazing and the nerves soon disappeared when we stood at the front and reminded ourselves that this was our day job!

Yesterday afternoon we were part of an exam analysis meeting, with all 32 maths teachers present from the school. They spoke about areas of strength in the department and areas where they need to develop their teaching further; which questions caused difficulty and why; and did the questions assess the skills they were intended to.

Today in Primary I didn't get to see any Chinese teaching- instead I observed two classes taught by the English teachers here. It was clear that they had also learnt so much through their time in Shanghai. We finished the day off in the art department! The Chinese host teachers joined us to make bookmarks using traditional Chinese methods. I doubt I will ever get the paint off my fingers but it was worth it!
