Mastering Number at Key Stage 2

Project Code: NCP 24-06

Knowledge of multiplication and division and its applications forms the single most important aspect of the KS2 curriculum and is the gateway to success at secondary school. It is also a key area that pupils often struggle with. Automaticity with multiplication tables relieves cognitive load and develops pupils’ confidence to achieve success.

The project offers schools that are involved in Mastering Number at Reception and KS1, and are also in a Sustaining Work Group, the opportunity for teachers to develop the knowledge and skills to secure good multiplicative number sense and automaticity in times tables.

Who can take part?

If your school can answer yes to the following questions, then you can apply:

  • Are you in a Sustaining Work Group?

  • Have you also completed at least a year of the Mastering Number at Reception and KS1 Programme, and are continuing to use the materials?

  • Are your teachers in Year 4 and 5 able to commit fully to this project?

If you are junior school in a Sustaining Work Group and your teachers in Year 4 and 5 are able to commit fully to this project, you can also apply.

If oversubscribed, priority for places will be given to schools with a high proportion of disadvantaged children.

This programme is open to state-funded primary schools in England.

What is involved?

Lead Teachers will take part in online workshops, once a term, as well as a local session once a term with their Work Group Lead.

Professional development materials will be provided to cover five short sessions a week, with participants expected to support colleagues in their year groups to use the resources with all Year 4 and 5 classes.

There is also the expectation that participants will contribute to an online community to share practice and engage in critical reflection.

What is the cost?

Mastering Number at KS2  is fully funded by the Maths Hubs Programme so is free to participating schools.

How to apply

Eligible schools will be contacted by the Maths Hub.

Once the school has applied, the Maths Hub will then make contact with you to explain next steps. Application does not automatically mean that you will be offered a place as there are limited places available.
