Engaging with Parents at Key Stage 2

Project Code: RIWG 23I

What challenges hinder parents or carers when supporting their child's learning of mathematics at Key Stage 2? What strategies can be used to address these challenges to help improve confidence?

Research evidence suggests that when parents are engaged in their children’s learning, outcomes for children can be improved.

This is a three day Research and Innovation Work Group for teachers in a primary school setting who wish to work with colleagues from other schools in order to explore how to engage with parents of children at Key Stage 2.

Who can take part?

The Work Group is designed to support primary school teachers to develop the necessary knowledge and skills to support parents, including those of disadvantaged students, to achieve better long term outcomes.

What is involved?

Participating in the Work Group will give you the opportunity to:

  • Explore why some parents struggle to support their children with maths at home

  • Investigate different strategies and approaches to adapt in your own setting

  • Look at representations and structures used in maths when teaching multiplication and division and fractions.

  • Reflect on how we can engage with parents so that they can do maths with their children using methods that may be different to their own learning experience at school

  • Consider how we share activities with parents and child learners to support them rather than put them off

What is the cost?

This Research and Innovation Work Group is fully funded by the Maths Hubs Programme so is free to participating schools.
